Roundel (1997 -  )

In 1960 the Democratic Republic of Congo gained independence. The new national flag was used as a fin marking for the Congolese Air Force, while wings and fuselage carried a yellow star on a blue disc.
Bars of red with a thin yellow border were added later to the roundels.
In 1972 the country changed its name to Zaïre. The new new national flag was green with a yellow disc bearing an arm carrying a torch. This was the fin marking 1972-1997. A roundel, or roundel and bar version, was used on wings and fuselage.
In 1997 Zaïre became the Democratic Republic of Congo. It is assumed that aircraft insignia may revert to the original 1960 version.

It is reported that since 1997 the first roundel (with today's flag as fin flash) was brought back. The only evidence to that is a drawing at this page. Since it is Su-25, it can't be from 1960-3.

Roundel (1960 - 1964)

[Roundel of 1960] by Frank George Valoczy, 02 Jul 2003

First roundel (1960-64) was accompanied by the flag as fin flash. in the plate on this page it is the 1963 flag, so before it , the 1960 flag was probably used.
